The Freedom of Information Act 2000 gives a general right of access to all types of recorded information held by public bodies. ”Public Bodies” includes the Probation Trust, central and local government, the NHS, the police, the armed forces, the BBC as well as schools and other educational establishments.

Public bodies are to comply and maintain a publication scheme setting out the classes of information it holds, the approach in which it intends to publish the information and if a charge will be made for the information.
