Welcome to Humberside Probation Trust’s website. I am pleased that you are interested in the work that we do, and I hope you find our website accessible and informative.

During a time of change within the public sector, I can tell you that Humberside Probation Trust is a confident and forward looking organisation. I am proud to lead the Trust as we undertake the work of managing and supervising those who have committed crimes within our communities.

You will appreciate that this is not easy work. It is always challenging and demanding. However, Humberside Probation Trust has an embedded culture of high performance, and I have the benefit of leading highly skilled and committed staff. In addition, much of our work is dependent on the close and productive partnerships that we have developed with a range of other agencies, and I am, again, proud of the wide network of services and provision that the Trust and partners have put in place.

Thank you for taking time to look at our website. It demonstrates how the Trust is meeting its statement of purpose, which is “… to make the diverse communities we serve safer by working with others to: reduce reoffending, protect the public, and support the victims of crime”.

The North Lincolnshire Youth Offending Burglary Project is one of eleven programmes across the UK to win an award at the Howard League’s Community Programme Awards 2012. The multi-agency programme came joint runner up in the Children and Young People category.

The Howard League for Penal Reform awards are given to the country’s most successful community projects and aim to increase public and government support for community sentences. The awards are designed to not only celebrate success but also to promote positive practice in the delivery of community sentences.

The Youth Offending Burglary Project provides intensive, bespoke interventions for up to twelve offenders who have presented as the most prolific in respect of burglary type crimes. Through the project they receive an enhanced level of intervention, monitoring and support from a multi-disciplinary youth offending team which is supplemented by input from specialist private sector provision and a range of community resources.

The project started in response to spiralling levels of youth crime during 2010-11 in North Lincolnshire, and specifically high levels of domestic burglaries and youth custody rates alongside a failure to manage individuals on bail. There was a great sense of urgency that the devastation caused in local communities by youth burglary had to be halted and that existing provision and inter-agency working was insufficient.

The aims and objectives of the project are:

To reduce youth burglary and custody rates

To provide a range of varied and effective community based interventions

To develop inter-agency working to improve compliance and engagement

To reduce the number of victims

To make people feel and be safe in their community.

PROBATION FIRST TIMERS

Well as you are attending Probation you probably think “what’s the point!!!” so here are fifteen good reasons probation is worth your time:

1. At probation groups you will be with other females, and although you may be strangers at first you have some other women’s support from the beginning.

2. There are professionals who attend the group equipped to help with other users, surrounding offending such as housing, employment and counselling etc.

3. The programme run at the groups is varied and it allows access to fire safety tips, healthy eating tips and stress busting tips.

4. If you have children, crèche is available (it’s nice to be alone sometimes) so you can have a little respite.

5. There are staff willing to help if you need to talk.

6. It’s women only and us women do love our tea so hey, you can have a cuppa.

7. You can voice your opinions, the rule goes “what’s at probation stays at probation.”

8. Benefits advice is obtainable if asked for.

9. Empower attend. They are a support agency specialising in employment support.

10. You are treated with respect no matter what your background or offence.

11. There is the added benefit of a notice board with trips/clubs.

12. Your probation officer will give you feedback on your progress.

13. E-Factor attend some sessions with helpful info about self-employment.

14. Probation offers a structure or pivotal point in your week.

15. Probation is probation. accept it and work to better yourself. If you do what have you got to lose?

Humberside Probation Trust has completed a detailed response to the proposals contained within the Effective Community Sentences and Effective Probation Services consultation documents. This has been sent to the Ministry of Justice along with a very helpful and constructive response from Humberside Criminal Justice Board’s diversity panel on the equality and diversity aspects of the proposals.

The plans set out by Justice Secretary Ken Clarke were intended to ensure community sentences are a tough and credible punishment that better tackle reoffending, supported by reforms aimed at modernising probation to cut crime. The plans aim to make better use of the innovation, capacity and diversity of voluntary private providers who are in partnership with the probation service.
