Community Payback

Community Payback – how to get involved

In the Humberside area over 160,000 hours of Community Payback are completed every year by offenders on a community sentence. This equates to approximately £800,000 of free labour provided to local communities as offenders pay back for the crimes they have committed.

Community Payback projects range from litter removal to clearing dense under growth, and environmental projects through repairing and redecorating community centres or removing graffiti. Offenders usually work as part of a team, monitored by a supervisor, and will work all day with short breaks, although there are some opportunities for individual placements.

To be considered your project must meet the following criteria

  • It must benefit the local community
  • It must not take paid work away from others
  • No one must make a profit from the work
  • It must be challenging and demanding
  • It must be worthwhile and constructive
  • Offenders must be seen to be putting something back into the community.

The Community Payback team will assess the project for suitability and for health and safety implications.

Once the work has been completed a plaque will be displayed with the Community Payback logo, if appropriate. This will indicate where offenders have positively contributed to improving a neighbourhood.

Anyone can nominate a project, so, if you are an individual, member of a club, community group, faith group or voluntary organisation and have a project that fits the criteria above, please complete and submit the form below online or call the Community Payback team at Humberside Probation Trust on telephone number:

Leys Farms Junior School :

"I am writing on behalf of our whole school community to thank you for enabling the excellent work which has been done at our school. To say it has made a huge difference is a great understatement: the outside environment of the school has been transformed and the end result far exceeds what we could have hoped for. Our funds are very limited and this project has meant that maintenance and improvement work has been done which we could not have afforded for many years."

Market Weighton, East Riding of Yorkshire 2009 :

Community Payback Offenders, level stone after building the steps to a local playing field in Market Weighton, East Riding of Yorkshire.

“The Town Council is very pleased with the achievements of Community Payback offenders in Market Weighton. Residents are particularly impressed with the steps and handrails created in places where slippery muddy slopes made access to footpaths and playing fields hazardous in bad weather. The group has willingly tackled a variety physically challenging tasks on behalf of the community which would otherwise have been neglected, through lack of funding, by the local authorities. Thank you.”

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Humberside Probation Trusts’ Community Payback Unit for the work undertaken on and around the Ings Shopping Centre. The standard of work has been very high.

Community Payback has had a dramatic impact on the whole area making it look clean and cared for. We have had many complimentary comments from local residents and Councillors on the difference made by Community Payback.

We look forward to a continuous good working relationship with the Community Payback Team in the future.

Many thanks
